Adapted from: Information presented at "Listening With the Whole Body: With Sheila Frick and Colleen Hacker, 1999&2000. The Listening Program
Is Your Listening Program "Just Right"? Your Listening Program is probably "just right" when: * The child is making changes * Undesired behavior is not outside bounds of what should typically be expected * Mild stress may be present but isn't enough to create disorganization * Sensory strategies that have worked in the past continue to be effective for reorganization Your Therapeutic Listening Program is probably "too much" when: * The child's typical daily rhythms (sleep, appetite) are disrupted for more than a day or two * The degree of disorganization present is uncomfortable for the child or the child's family * Behavioral shifts interfere with function in other environments (school, home, etc) Your Therapeutic Listening Program is probably "not enough" when": * There is no increase in energy and ability to sustain optimal arousal state * The music does not hold the child's attention and non-compliance persists * Change noted is minimal and does not seem to hold * You may notice signs of discomfort, tension, or disorganization during the use of the The Listening Program. Often periods of disorganization proceed periods of reorganization, and these periods are transitory in nature. Behaviors such as emotional responses may be observed. It is the frequency, intensity, and duration which these behaviors are noted and their interference with functional outcomes that should be used to assess the need to change The Listening Program.
